Briefing Highlights Importance of an Ecosystem-Based Management System for the Antarctic Krill Fishery

On October 18, 2007, marine science and policy experts hosted a briefing to preview the 26th annual meeting of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) taking place in Hobart, Tasmania from October 22 to November 2. At the conference, delegates will discuss the protection and management of krill, the "bread and butter" for much of Antarctica's iconic wildlife, including many whales, penguins, seals and seabirds. The Commission will also work to combat pirate fishing on the high-seas by strengthening CCAMLR's ability to stop illegal, unregulated and unreported (IUU) fishing for Patagonian toothfish, better known as Chilean sea bass.

The press conference briefing and with Q&A session highlighted the importance of developing an ecosystem-based management system for the Antarctic krill fishery and the need to end IUU fishing.

Participants:

  • Gerald Leape — Vice President, Marine Conservation, National Environmental Trust
  • Ari S. Friedlaender, Ph.D. — Post Doctoral Research Associate, Duke University Marine Laboratory
  • Mark Stevens — Senior Program Officer, World Wildlife Fund
  • Andi Pearl — Manager, Antarctic Krill Conservation Project (moderator)
